always lurking in the background, making sure I never truly move on. Some moments can't be erased from your mind's history, like when I sent that private message to the entire group chat. My relationship with Derick was just as unforgettable.

The way he looked at me after, the silence that followed—no amount of time could ever dull that sting.

I couldn't, however, let him see that side of me. So I swallowed my sorrow like pills and let him believe that I was all right. 

Because I was.

..Right?

But Derick was’t believing it. It was a dead giveaway when he looked straight at me and said…”I don’t believe it.” I sighed. When would I get to just escape my sorrow in peace? I started to think that I’d need to swallow another kind of pill before long.

Then my man James came in and said “mates, there’s a big party tonight! It’s gonna be THA BOMB! Put on your best gear and let’s go!” I figured a good party might end my misery, or at least distract from it. So I put on my favorite party outfit:

a faded band t-shirt and ripped jeans. I figured if it was a real party, everyone would be too busy dancing to judge my style. Besides, maybe some good music and a few drinks could help me forget about everything, and I grabbed my keys and headed out the door.

From the moment Kaily could walk & speak, her parents tried to spark something in her. They tried everything. Potions & spells to awake any magic inside her. But nothing. 
She grew up watching her sister use water magic to wash the dishes, seeing her sister, she felt… powerless…

Until one day her sister dropped a wet glass onto the kitchen floor. Just as the glass began to shatter, Kaily shrieked with shock. Then the strangest thing happened: the glass stopped, reassembled itself, and rose back up to her sister’s hand. Then Kaily sneezed.

A spray of mucus and saliva propelled from her face then similar to the glass paused, hanging impossibly in the air for a moment before reversing back into her nostrils and mouth. "¿gnineppah s'tahW" she asked, standing up and walking unnaturally backwards through an open doorway

A talking pig in a tuxedo appeared next to her asking "yes ma'am you called?", extending her a handkerchief

It was Gustav the Cosmopolitan Pig, famous late night talk show host & savant. The walls behind her opened to reveal an applauding audience. Her parents were there as well as her childhood best friend. "This," grunted Gustav, "is your life!" The cameras rolled & her moment began.

I stare out in to the city, knowing this could go terribly wrong. Getting ready to jump off the plane, I have no fear I was taught not to. The light turns red and the pilot gives me a thumbs up to go...

but somehow I freeze, stood on the aircraft's wing - I can't jump despite being convinced by my masters that I cannot physically be damaged or feel pain in any form. Is this a test? Why would they make this the first demonstration of my apparent powers? An intense heat begins to

radiate from the engine below, the air thickens with an unbearable pressure, & yet I remain frozen, my mind racing w/ questions I can’t answer. What are these powers they’ve given me? If I can’t feel pain, why does the heat threaten to overwhelm me? Is this all part of the test?

I laugh as my skin absorbs the heat, channeling it into my fingertips. With a snap, I send bolts of heat wherever I point. I destroy 2 walls and a door before I learn how to control this ability.

The entire room starts collapsing as I run from the crumbling building and into the street, zapping heat into the sky. I cackle and give into the glee. I run to the club and start subtlety zapping bad dancers so they just they’re overheating. Thus I became the dancing police.

Suddenly, the tower of empty Oreo containers toppled to the ground.

"Dang it, I was so close to finishing my tower, maybe even making a new world record" I shake my head

"Awh, you poor thing, bless your sweet little heart. It'll be on your tombstone- 'Cause of death: Couldn't finish his game."

“Funny, isn't it? You spent all this time obsessed with victory, chasing that next level like it was everything. And now, what’s left? A screen with no more lives to lose, no more challenges to face. Just a quiet, empty room, and a game that never saw its end."

Years later I still find myself thinking about that sentence. An assertion, ultimately. At least that's what I pretend it to be, but in the quiet hours of the night it continues to defy submersion. My personal spectre, standing beside me in the darkness with it's permanent rictus

Jerry glanced down at the photograph in his hand, then back up again at the woman sitting alone at the back of the cafe.

Her face was familiar, but the years had blurred the details. Jerry hesitated, wondering if she would recognize him, if she even remembered. The soft clink of coffee cups around him seemed to fade as he took a cautious step forward.

All at once a blinding light coursed through the space. Jerry and the woman froze. And then a creature appeared, seemingly from the air itself.

Its form shifted and writhed, a mass of shadows and flickering tendrils, its eyes glowing like molten embers in the dim cafe light.
