Mama didn’t like when Jase burnt things in the kitchen, the smell lingered for days. Jase sighed to himself and hungrily walked the remnants of the meatloaf to the trash can. As he opened the lid, a crumpled piece of notebook paper sat on top of rubbish…

It read “LOW AND SLOW” in neat block capital letters. He opened the folded note and read the writing inside. “Turn the heat down and cook it longer. Trust me. Love, T.G.” From that day on, Jase became a great chef, thanks to the subtle intervention of The Trashcan Gourmet.

The cannon had taken them all out, he was the only one left now, however they continued to fire, and he didn’t have much time left.

Simon's brother approached him as clots of dirt rained down. "We gotta go!" he cried. Simon shook his head. He wasn't done reading "Animal Farm". "The book report's due tomorrow!" he yelled over the explosions' thunder. "Are you nuts?" his brother cried. "There's a war going on!"

Simon said softly “don’t you see? This book is about the war raging around us. The clues are all there. Four legs good, two legs better!” 
He tapped the page for emphasis. “The question is, are we the pigs or are we the horses?”

“I don’t know daddy, but I’d rather be a horse because people sure love bacon!” Luna said braiding the doll that sat in her lap. “Anyways, can you paint my nails yet?” She finished, looking at Simon with those puppy dog eyes.

“Sure thing Luna.” And with that, Simon cradled her hoof softly in his blacksmith hands and began carefully inspecting Luna’s right horseshoe. “Any particular color?” he asked. Luna whinnied and said, “moonstone, please.”

Jerry glanced down at the photograph in his hand, then back up again at the woman sitting alone at the back of the cafe.

Her hair was much shorter than it was when he last saw her; her golden curls dangling at her shoulders.

All at once a blinding light coursed through the space. Jerry and the woman froze. And then a creature appeared, seemingly from the air itself.

They both expected the creature to lunge at their throats but instead it circled around the lake before them.
