Running Away From Fate

I've never been in a relationship. I want to, of course. I met this guy. Max. He told me that he really liked me and the way I talked. We've been on eight dates and then he just ghosted me for 4 months. He said his boss told him to leave all he knew alone. We sat in my bed.

"Why are you letting your boss control your life? Because of that, I had to suffer and cry for four months of complete silence from you." I told Max, my boyfriend. He sighed. "It's not that simple. My boss...is the head of the mafia." I immediately understood. "Let's run away."

We got in the car and drove all night. We had no attachments in Wichita—just each other. We got on the highway and drove toward the Canadian border without thinking. We stopped in Des Moines so Max could take over driving. When we got out to switch we hugged each other and cried.
