A fever dream for the new year

13 January 2021

  • Ash pasted the Zoom link in the group email and hit “send.” As he waited for boxes to appear on his laptop screen, he popped open his beer can and fired up a playlist on his phone. New Year’s Eve wasn’t going to be a rager, but it would be good to spend the last minutes of 2020

  • One by one his friends popped up on the screen. By 11:40, they were all chatting about what 2021 might hold. At 11:55, with 5 minutes left in the year, something mind-warpingly bizarre happened.

  • Everyone’s clocks simultaneously started turning backwards. The conversation about 2021 ground to a halt. What could this mean? Reliving the past year was simply not acceptable. But what could they do?!

  • Just then a little boy with an angelic yet unsettling smile walked up and presented a solution to reversing time. They would just simply wipe everyone's memories about 2020. 2021 would become the new 2020 and so on each year. Therefore every past year would not truly be relived.

  • There must have been an alternative to a life reviled and relived only to be revealed again.

  • “And indeed there is another way. With one phone call and $28.99 (plus tax), YOU TOO can master YOUR destiny“ the TV proclaimed as Gerald awoke from his slumber. That’s the last time I eat spicy nachos before bed, he thought. Then he climbed out of the bathtub and went to bed.
