A band of light could be seen in the sky that night, channeling down like a knight’s sword, slicing through the terrible dark. The entire population had all turned their heads right at that moment—either asleep or ignorant—completely unaware of the astronomic oddity.
All but one.

One child with a cheap telescope and a hand me down smart phone captured the proof. Evidence of the focused light probing earth’s atmosphere. Wisely, the child shared the footage with the scientific community first.

They couldn’t rack their brains about it either. Soon after little Billy Bob’s discovery, it had spread to national news, then worldwide news. People from all around the globe speculated at how and why this strobe of light came to be. Little did everyone know this would be

the first alien invasion in a million years. In the previous one, an entire species was wiped out. Let’s hope this time the humans get to survive. Anyways, little Billy Bob unzipped his pants and out came a little lizard. He demanded on the news that everyone bow to him, or else…

Of course, the press had a million questions. "Are we supposed to bow down to the lizard or Billy Bob?" "Is that lizard an anole or a skink?" "How did you keep that lizard in your pants without it nipping your nipper?" "Do you listen to the Dead Milkmen?" "What's the point of ∑?"

The people waited anxiously. “Listen, these aliens may take some time getting used to but—“ his face rippled. People stirred uneasily. The man’s face fell away to reveal a lizard. “Damn it! There goes the plan.” He held up a neuralyzer. “Sorry, folks. This won’t hurt at all…”

The crater trembled and six magnificent wings unfurled, each extending higher than the tallest tree in the forest. Above their rising head—a halo—shimmering like a shooting star. As the light dimmed, the celestial light became impossible to distinguish from that of the moonlight.

“Be not afraid,” the six-winged creature of legend called out, “For it is I, a messenger of the Lord.” A man trembled at the fear-inducing sight, and collapsed before it. “What will you have me do?” the man stammered. “Go now, and spread the Word. The Lord hath returned.” He then

totally screwed up. He thought the messenger meant Lorde, the New Zealand singer. He printed posters that read "ROYALTY COMES!" & posted them all over town. He thought the words were a clever allusion to her stage name & 1st single. There was only one thing he did not anticipate.

That was how insanely catchy her song Solar Power is. It just builds up and up then ends leaving you wanting more. This song about the beach has ended marriages and toppled governments, all part of Lorde’s plan.

As it played in my earbuds, my heart lifted at the silence before the final chorus. My hands tightened around the splintered axe handle. I spun to the beat. Red on the walls. Red dripping down my cheek. Pure bliss. I love Lorde, she’s my idol. But screams reigned in on the music.

I had perfectly and intentionally matched the shade of my blush to the wallpaper of the axe throwing silent nightclub, and the harder I danced, the more it coagulated inside the droplets of sweat falling from my brow.

I knew I was playing a dangerous game, but I also knew that the prize was worth it, for the first time in my life, I was going to hit it big, I knew it so much I could taste it

Follow the pale green fish, I say, and follow her all the way, and you’ll find you can wish away for a brighter, better day.

I don my speedo and snorkel. I strap a knife in a nylon sheath to my ankle. I ease myself into the warm water. The green fish glows, seemingly in delight, and I swim behind it as it leads me out of the bay.

We swim past reefs clouded with gorgeous fish & sea creatures, over plains of sea grass, & finally to a gorge hidden within shadow. The fish's green light illuminates the dark enough for me to see it's brought me to a site of sunken ruins. It is Xenochtibal, the lost Azetec city!

We’d read about in books. Now here it was infront our very eyes. The buildings glimmering gold with mesmerising shades of jade and azure blue. Our eyes lit up as if we’d awaken from slumber and all our dreams were about to come true.

We knew, deep down, it was too good to be true. Something was amiss. We just hadn’t realised what yet. A city of gold had emerged, but not without a price, surely. While we were here, bathing in the light, there were more than enough dangers lurking in the dark.

That danger became obvious the closer we came. The glow, as it turns out, was a mirage that disappeared as we arrived. Gates came down all around us, trapping us forever in a troll den.
