I had never really lived for myself, always determined to put others in front of me. However one day I met Lucia, and I didn’t notice how far I had gone till I noticed the bodies littering the ground.

I let the knife slip from my trembling hand, unable to glance at the faces of the lives I took. My heart pounded as I looked up at the sky, my breaths coming out in short gasps. I went too far.

“Good work,” I heard Lucia say. “Took you long enough to deal with them, huh?”

My eyes snapped to meet Lucia’s, her expression calm. I wasn’t calm. As my breathing slowed, I felt the anger bubbling deep in the pit of my stomach. We both knew this was on her, all of it. She was the reason they were all dead. For a moment, I wish I hadn’t dropped that knife.

Lucia had a way with words, eyes with tugged you in and threatened never to let you go. We scrambled, her right arm reaching the knife by my feet before I had chance to blink. "Oh honey- it was always meant to end this way." Her words cut me just like the knife was about to.

I grabbed her wrist, putting my shoulder against her chest, and dropped to my knee. The knife clattered to the floor. She was flipped over onto the wooden platform. This collapsed under her weight, dropping her into the arms of a cop waiting below. “Farewell, love”, I whispered.
