First I thought I was blind but noticed that my surrounding was completely black. Suddenly a door in front of me was being opened. Confused I stumbled forward into the light. I heard a crowd and a loud voice from above yelled. "Welcome all, this will be a fight to the death"!

The only reason I considered the possibility of being blinded was because I was hit by a truck five minutes ago. Despite this, I was in the middle of a Roman arena with a massive crowd. Before I could think I was ambushed and a spear was to my throat. 'Mercy me!' I yelled.

‘Mercy?’ Spat the great hulk of a gladiator, looming above me. ‘You expect me to be merciful after what you did to my brother? No, I’m going to make this nice and slow for you.’ With the last few words he ground the tip of his spear against my throat.

No, I don’t want to die like this, with shame! There’s no point of asking for mercy now. If I’m going to die.. I would die holding my sword, fighting! “I dragged myself away from the spear and with a quick move I picked up my sword. I coughed, I’m tired, but that won’t stop me!”

I got a burst of adrenaline & swung my sword at my sworn enemy's chest, slashing him. His eyes widened, surprised. "That's what you get for killing my brother," I shouted. But then I collapsed from my own wounds. We both lay on the ground, motionless, as the grim reaper arrived.

Soon I felt a familiar dark mist begin overtaking my body while chains pulled me down into the earth. As I struggled to resist, a deep voice from the mist grumbled, “One more, then no more.” The reaper suddenly appeared, swiped his scythe to break the chains, then vanished.

I knew this was it, my last chance at life. I walked away from all my troubles, and went somewhere warm. I spend my days fishing and my nights learning the harmonica. It was a good life. Six months later I was struck in the head by a plum-sized meteorite and died instantly.

'Twas the night before Halloween. Jasmine and Elvis packed up their things after Men's Zone leaving Danielle behind to finish her schoolwork. "Get home safe," they yelled, the door clicking shut. Alone Danielle tried to focus but humming, creaks, and shuffles echoed in theoffice.

Danielle frozen. The fluorescent lights above flickered once, then steadied. She glanced toward the hallway-empty. Just the hum of the vending machine and the occasional groan of the old building settling.

Out of the corner of her eye, she thought she saw something, better yet, someone familiar. But that couldn’t be. She was here alone. Wasn’t she?

For her to have company meant only one thing: she had been followed. Careful not to show any signs of panic in case she alerted her little friend to her discovery, she picked up her pace. If she could just make it to the meeting point, she would find safety in numbers.

Her heart was racing as she turned the corner into the plaza. Luckily, it was market day. She grabbed a handful of ripe tomatoes and pitched them randomly into the crowd, yelling “FOOooD FIiiiiiGHT!” The plaza erupted into chaos and she made her escape to the docks.

Barbie Holmes was ready to investigate her first crime scene. She exited her pink police car, the door shutting with a satisfying thud. Being a detective was not easy, but it paid well. She approached the porch of 122 Carrot Circle, keeping an eye out for anything out of place.

Her lieutenant had always given her an earful about her pink car. "Perps can spot you a mile away, you need to be conspicuous. Sneak up on them." But damn that Lieutenant Vatznick. She liked her style!

Detective Hopper was thanking her lucky stars for her feminine habits today of all days. That misogynistic pig wouldn’t see his destruction coming as it sauntered towards him in 6 inch heels and wet look lip gloss.

He glanced up at her in disgust, which only made her smile. His doom was unto himself. She was very proud of her shoes, as they placed her just above his height.
"Good evening, sir. I've hope you've had a - pleasant time."

He chuckled then started to answer. She held up a hand 2 inches from his face and said “I don’t actually care. Hush.” When he started to stand, she put both hands atop his head and pushed downwards steadily. He got progressively flatter and wider, until he became a rug.

Jerry glanced down at the photograph in his hand, then back up again at the woman sitting alone at the back of the cafe.

Where the skin on her cheek had once been soft, unmarred, there was now a raised jagged ridge. But it was her sure enough, he’d recognise those violet-hued eyes anywhere. He felt his mouth go dry, his tongue sandy. Hadn’t he seen her die himself?

All at once a blinding light coursed through the space. Jerry and the woman froze. And then a creature appeared, seemingly from the air itself.

At first he thought one of the pigeons had gotten through the automatic doors again, until realisation dawned on him as the smell of salt and seawater rushed towards him: the Selkie had come back for what he had taken.
